Mattress Protectors: Everything you need to know

Honestly, not to sound like a stan bot but I cannot resist a movie with mind-blowing plot twists. Be it mystery, thriller, horror, romance, or even period dramas, a film with a jaw-dropping climax sequence is the epitome of a good weekend.

A hard-earned weekend is to be celebrated. One of my favourite ways of doing so is organizing a screening with friends at home paired with a loaded charcuterie board and a good bottle of wine.

Now when the movie gets interesting and you’re holding red wine with half a bottle down, jump scares aren’t your first choice. But when all these things do come together, it’s a recipe for disaster.

Especially if this party is hosted on the comfort of a mattress, the red wine spills are going to become a real life 5-star rated IMDB horror. But there’s a way out! Waterproof mattress protectors are an absolute life saver in such cases!

In simple terms, mattress protectors are covers designed to shield your mattress from everyday wear and tear, and other occasional disasters.

Available in a wide range of materials, from hypoallergic fabrics to waterproof vinyls, this product isn’t only for the safety of your mattress but also that of yours from allergens, mites, and bed bugs.

Why do you need one?

Mattress protectors not only resist stains and spills, they also prevent wear-and-tear of the mattress thus, decreasing the depreciation of the product.

If you have chosen a protector of good quality, it will also protect you from bed bugs, mites, etc and even prevent unhygienic layer of dust from compounding on the surface.

This product is a great choice for people with infants and pets. If you’re someone easily prone to allergies, it might be a good pick for you as well.

What are mattress protectors made of?

Various materials can be used to make the ideal and most effective mattress protector. This can include both virgin and blended materials. Most commonly found materials include cotton, bamboo, and polyester.

The upper layer of the product is made of the fabric whereas the bottom layer is laminated using breathable TPU films which is the secret behind the exceptional protection that this product gives to your mattress.

Which material to choose?

Each material used for making this product has its own story for being chosen.

Starting with cotton, this is one of the most commonly used fabric. In this case, cotton is chosen for the softness that it gives to the final product. You wouldn’t want to be uncomfortable or irritated on a resting place, would you? Cotton assures that your comfort is taken care of.

Bamboo comes into the picture for its properties of making the product anti-bacterial and anti-odour. If you are prioritizing these features, you might want to go with a bamboo-based product surface.

Coming to the blends, cotton-poly provides durability to the product. The blend makes the fibres stronger as compared to virgin materials and makes the product last longer.

Lastly, 100% polyester is quite a strong material and will stretch the life of the product much longer as compared to the other fabrics.

Care & Maintenance of the product

It is crucial to clean your mattress protector at regular intervals to remove the accumulated dust and allergens. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s washing instructions as they are product specific.

On a general note, mattress protectors can be machine washed and are to be dried in low heat. It is advised to air dry them to prevent shrinkage. By any means, it is suggested to change the product after using it for a couple years to maintain the hygiene levels. By following these simple cleaning habits, you can ensure a healthy sleeping environment.
